Pew Research, an organization that usually favors Democrats, has published a new poll showing the low level of trust between the American people and their government. Inadvertently, their chart reveals that the level of trust and satisfaction with government goes down when we have Democratic administrations: Carter, Clinton, and Obama. It's an interesting phenomenon since Democrats generally favor federal government solutions to every problem. So, why is the party continuing to speed toward massive government take over of auto industry, banking industry, health care, etc.?

Today is the day that Christians all over the world celebrate and thank God for the abundance He showers upon us before entering the austere lessons of Lent. A Mardi Gras prayer includes these words:

As our feasting fills us with gratitude, so may our fasting and abstinence hollow out in us a place for deeper desires and an attentiveness to hear the cry of the poor.

Those who participated in last fall’s prayer campaign (If My People) should also include thanks and heartfelt gratitude for these answers to our prayers for the United States:

* The elections in Virginia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts
* The failure of the Underwear Bomber’s attempt to blow up a plane load of passengers over a densely populated area
* The exposure of lying and fraud by the primary scientists behind the global warming theories
* The continued unraveling of the massive health care proposals
* The resignations of many politicians

Once again let’s join other Americans in praying for our country during Lent, which starts tomorrow. Much needs to change in our government, in our culture, and in our personal lives; let’s pray for improvement (i.e. realignment with God’s purposes) in all areas. Then after Easter, take note of the miracles that unfold.

Although I have often been Missing-In-Action for the last three months, I am returning to the daily blog today. I promise to have brief meditations every day to remind you to pray, as well as tidbits of political news you may have missed.

2. Spiritual Exercises is a website for those who use Lent to examine their lives in the light of the Gospel. These exercises were first promulgated by St. Ignatius of Loyola and have inspired Christians for over 450 years. I have used them twice and found them quite helpful.
3. Once again the Aggie Catholics have come up with their Lenten website, which is full of information, many answers to questions, and links to other sites.

We Knew It All Along

But, finally even the government bureaucrats have to admit that joblessness is much worse than previously reported -- 8.4 million jobs lost rather than 7.2 million. MarketWatch at WSJ tells the complete story that politicians were trying to hide. The most fascinating tidbit of the article is that the largest number of unreported job losses occurred during the first quarter of Obama's presidency.

Another Way to Stop Corruption

Of course, it would put a lot of IRS employees out of work, but think how it would help everyday people to have a simple, fair tax code. Time to Reboot

Ever so often, even my fabulous MacBook needs to be rebooted just to set everything straight again. And my fabulous country needs a reboot too.

We have become so used to dishonest politicians and shady deals, that we've forgotten what it was like before politics became a career path to accumulating great wealth, before tax cheats continued to hold their office despite exposure, and before our public servants rammed budget breaking bills through the legislative process without even reading them. We have forgotten what the standards of conduct for politicians should be.

Just 57 years ago we had a president who was basically honest, no matter what his other faults were. From now on we must change our thinking and our culture to demand a similar attitude in those we elect to serve us.

The following is from an email my favorite uncle, a WWII veteran, sent me.

Harry Truman: Harry Truman was a different kind of President. He probably made as many, or more important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 32 Presidents preceding him. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.

The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence Missouri. His wife had inherited the house from her mother and father and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.

When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an 'allowance' and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.

After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale. (sic. Illinois )

Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!

News about US from Australia Via Costa Rica

An interesting letter in the Australian Shooter Magazine this week, which I quote:

"If you consider that there has been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theatre of operations during the past 22 months, and a total of 2112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers per month.

The firearm death rate in Washington , DC is 80.6 per 100,000 for the same period. That means you are about 25 percent more likely to be shot and killed in the US capital, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the US , than you are in Iraq"

Conclusion: "The US should pull out of Washington "

Count The Crowd for Your Self

These time lapse crowd shots show the mass of people who paid their own way to go to Washington to express their beliefs. Too bad Obama and most Democrat Clowns got the h**l out of Dodge before they arrived.

Some newspapers have estimated the crowd there today as "tens of thousands," but the DC park police guessed at least 1,200,000 or 120 of those tens of thousands. Ca$h for Clunkers

According to the Council of Economic Advisors, the Cash for Clunkers program cost the American taxpayer $8,700 for each additional automobile sale. By analyzing car sales, they concluded that only an additional 330,000 cars were sold than would have been expected without the program, hardly a bonanza for either the economy or the auto dealers who filled out reams of paperwork for the priviledge of waiting for the government to make good on its promises. What Is The Rush?

Obama intended to ram his plans for our health care through by the end of July and he certainly expects to do it before the end of the year. Yet, none of it takes effect until 2013 -- the year he plans to be inaugurated for his second term of office.

Could it be that he knows how bad the bill is? Is this a way of disguising his lies about it until after the November elections of 2012? Does he understand that few will vote for him of their own free will AFTER living under his health care for just a year or two? Do his actions display the kind of moral courage that we need in the person who leads our country?

Something New under The Sun

Or rather, there is something new on the Internet -- political entertainment. Apparently the first one, Moving Numbers, will be a sit com about getting someone elected to the Senate. Waiting in the wings are series called: Scoops,a reality based show with amateur journalists; Look Who's Coming to Dinner, featuring conversations of insiders in DC restaurants; and My America, pairing liberals and conservatives introducing each other to the pastimes and pleasures of their America. The American Way

Followers of the American Way instinctively try to fix "it" themselves before asking for help. Although they quickly and graciously help any neighbor in need, decades of public relations efforts have still not diminished their internal reluctance for government welfare. American Way people have been accused of too rugged an individualism, yet, they have also crafted a society richer in personal freedoms, a higher standard of living and more technological advances than any other group in history.

Today, Kyle Anne Shriver at American Thinker presents a clear look at the clash of cultures now erupting on the American scene. She clarifies the situation by comparing the American Way to the Alinsky Way, while Democrat vs. Republican or Liberal vs. Conservative merely skew the conversation. You will be glad you read it.

Texas VS California

Way back in September, Nelson Guirado of Assymetric provided an excellent analysis of the current status of California and Texas. This is important now because California has been following the liberal program on taxes, the environment, and social services for years, while Texas has implemented more conservative laws and programs.

Here are Guirado’s highlights (remember these are figures from the middle of September):
1. Education results (with similar ethnic groups): Texas ranks 25th while California lags behind at 47th.
2. Unemployment in Texas is 4.3%, but in California, it’s 7.3%.
3. Taxes: Texas has the third lowest rate among the states while California is ranked eighth highest.
4. Deficits: California has a deficit of $15, 000,000,000 while Texas has a surplus.

From what I’ve observed since January 20, Obama and the Democrat Congress are rushing headlong to emulate or overtake California’s programs. Why? We have a proven life lesson right before our eyes.
