Lent 2010, Day 5

In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone. Luke 4:11

For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone. Psalm 91:11-12

The first verse above quotes Satan, as he tempts Jesus in the desert. The second verse is the actual Old Testament passage that he uses to dissuade Jesus from accomplishing His mission on earth.

Fortunately, Jesus did not fall for Satan's public relations campaign. Imagine the kick start Jesus ministry could have had if only He had jumped without injury. Instead He quietly began a teaching and healing mission that abruptly stopped with His beating and crucifixion while angels stood by, apparently helpless to prevent the murder of the most innocent man who ever lived.

Our God-given common sense and ability to reason will only carry us so far. Always, we must submit our best ideas to the scrutiny and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The Bible gives us guidance, but nothing replaces our real relationship with the God who loves us more than we love ourselves.
