Time Magazine vs Catholic Church

In a recent issue of Time, Amy Sullivan suggests that the “well-oiled” Catholic Bishops’ Postcard Campaign against the deceptively named Freedom of Choice Act is jousting at windmills. The "well-oiled" campaign primarily consists of average parishioners who volunteer time and effort to get the post cards signed and mailed to Senators and Representatives in Washington, D.C.

As for the snarky claim that Pro Life Catholics oppose “a piece of legislation that doesn't exist and wouldn't have much chance of becoming law even if it did,” she ignores two easily verified facts. One is that such a bill has been lingering in the wings in Congress since 1989 waiting for a veto proof majority in both houses to pass it. The other is that Obama promised Planned Parenthood last summer that one of the first items on his agenda as president would be passing and signing FOCA. And, he has Democrat majorities in both houses to make it easier than ever before.

You won't see much press coverage of FOCA, but if you want to know the truth about this bill, check out these facts:

• FOCA will be the most radical abortion legislation in the history of our country.
• FOCA will become a federal law insuring the right to have an abortion during the entire nine-month gestation.
• FOCA will compel taxpayers to fund abortions.
• FOCA will eradicate all state laws that limit abortion in any way.
• FOCA will allow technicians, not just physicians, to perform abortions.
• FOCA will establish abortion as a fundamental right with no restrictions.
• FOCA will eliminate laws forbidding partial birth abortions.
• FOCA will stamp out parental notification laws for minors seeking abortions.
• FOCA will overturn state abortion reporting requirements.
• FOCA will negate laws protecting right of conscientious objection to performing abortions by medical providers, such as: physicians, pharmacists, nurses, hospitals and clinics.
• FOCA undermines the free practice of one’s religion, as stated in the Bill of Rights.
• FOCA will do away with state laws requiring counseling or ultrasound before an abortion.
• FOCA will remove informed consent laws regarding abortions.

Even if you believe that abortion should remain legal, please contact your senators and representatives by phone, email, or letter expressing opposition to FOCA. This act removes all choice except abortion and infringes on our personal liberties.
