$400,000 Settlement for Girl Who Did Not Offer Evidence

Jana Elhifny moved to Nevada from Egypt with her family, attended school there for part of a year, then moved back to Egypt to marry her fiancé. During the few months she was in school, she filed a complaint that she had been threatened with death for wearing the Muslim hajib (head scarf) and none of the faculty stepped in to assist her. During the investigation she could not say whether her attacker(s) was male or female, what size of person he or she was, or what tone of voice was used during the threat. School officials claim that she was watched protectively, but no evidence could be found to support her accusations. Nevertheless, the school district recently agreed to settle by giving her $350,000 and $50,000 to a friend who had supported her story, such as it was. Read more here, if you're interested.
